Last month Bramptonist reported on the dismal state of Brampton’s public art budget, and the fact that most of the art is placed within Downtown Brampton. But there are plenty of other places across the city that we think could do with a little more vibrancy too. Research done by the University of Toronto even shows “that the higher people rate the beauty of their community, the higher their overall level of community satisfaction.
Here’s a list of some of those places.
1. The 410 bridge at Steeles
Visitors to Toronto are welcomed into the city from the Gardiner with the sight of the CN Tower and Rogers Centre. More iconic buildings than pieces of public art, but wouldn’t it be cool to welcome people to Brampton with something iconic too?
2. Gateway Terminal at Hurontario and Steeles
This is already a high traffic area, and will continue to be in the coming years as the Hurontario LRT terminal station is built. With the transformation of the area into a high density, mixed use area, residents and businesses will need something to look at besides buildings and trains.
3. Downtown Brampton laneways
Other than Vivian Lane, Downtown Brampton’s other laneways are pretty bare. With some effort though, they could be completely transformed with art installations on the walls, painted paths or hanging lanterns.
4. Hurontario & 407
What better way to welcome people to our city coming from the south with an epic piece of art? The “Welcome To Brampton” sign, though somewhat iconic, doesn’t constitute “epic.” It could be something flower inspired to represent Brampton’s longstanding label as Flower City.
5. Bramalea GO
This particular spot in Brampton gets lots of traffic from commuters and it’s a pretty bare area with little greenery or colour, which isn’t surprising given that it’s essentially a parking lot. Some public art could provide much-needed colour and add some substance to the mostly barren area. It could even be something functional, like funky bus shelters.

6. Chinguacousy Park
As the city’s biggest and most iconic park, Chinguacousy is long overdue for some public art. There are plenty of options too. Something at one of the main entrances could be cool. Because it’s such a frequented park, it could also be the perfect place for interactive installations.
7. Brampton Library & Civic Centre
Since the removal of the once beloved ice rink outside of the civic centre, the area just hasn’t been the same. A piece of public art could bring back some functionality to the area and draw more people there. This area sees lots of people pass through, from the mall, bus station and surrounding office buildings.
