Alessia Cara Wins Pop Album of the Year at Junos

Alessia Cara went from winning the Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year in 2016 to taking home the award for Pop Album of the Year in 2017.

2016 was a big year for the Brampton native. She opened up the MTV VMAs along with Troye Sivan, toured with Coldplay, sang the Oscar-nominated song How Far I’ll Go on Disney’s Moana soundtrack and has two Top 10 Billboard hits.

Cara managed to pick up four nominations, further solidifying her well-earned spot in Canadian music.

During her acceptance speech for the win she took home — Pop Album of the Year — Cara didn’t hold back from showing Brampton some love.

‘It was the first album I’ve ever released, so thank you for supporting it and believing in me. Shout to Brampton, I love you!”

In fact, Brampton got lots of love during the show. Co-host and fellow Bramptonian Russell Peters gave Cara — and Brampton — a shout out during his opening monologue.

“The Weeknd is dating Bieber’s ex. The Biebs is in Brazil probably punching a fan right now… but we do have Alessia Cara! She’s blowing up, Brampton represent!”

Later in the show, Peters popped Cara’s seat for an in-audience bit, showing some hometown pride.

Later Cara took to the stage and brought along Zedd to perform their new single Stay, followed by a brief performance of her hit song Scars to Your Beautiful.

At only 20, no doubt Cara will be one to watch for years to come. She’s just getting warmed up.
