Community and Public Services Committee

2019 FIBA U19 World Championship Bid Opportunity

  • City has the opportunity to host the 2019 FIBA U19 World Championship in June 2019
  • Bid would require $500 payment to Basketball Canada as well as application
  • Up to $145,000 in cash for event needed
  • In-kind value of $145,000 to be donated to rent Powerade Centre, Brampton Soccer Centre, other city facilities
  • Budget of $1.715 million mostly offset by other government levels, FIBA, and sponsors
  • 16 teams from around the world
  • If profit is made, 50 per cent of it would be reinvested in community basketball programs in Brampton

Canadettes Girls’ Hockey Association 50th Anniversary

  • Canadettes is a Brampton girls’ ice hockey team that will be celebrating their 50th anniversary next April
  • Their annual Easter tournament is the “World’s Largest and Longest Running Female Hockey Tournament”
  • Team wants a $115,000 donation from the city, staff are recommending $65,000 be provided through covering city facility rentals
  • Canadettes are hoping 400 teams come to their event; last year 355 teams attended

Brampton School Traffic Safety Committee

  • Fernforest Public School (page 27)
    • Resident complaining they are getting parking tickets when dropping kids off to school
  • St. Rita Catholic School (page 28)
    • Resident concerned about congestion when a child was struck outside of the school
  • Schools in Balmoral Drive area (page 29)
    • Resident concerned for kids crossing Balmoral Drive, especially since nearest school doesn’t put out crossing guard for certain time, but other schools in area open earlier
    • Would like a traffic light at Balmoral/Edenborough to force drivers to stop
