Godavari, Brampton’s latest restaurant specializing in South Indian cuisine recently opened their doors in Downtown Brampton at the corner of George St. N. and Nelson Street. Walking up you’ll notice the great outdoor patio which is no doubt great for summer dining.
The restaurant is purely vegetarian serving authentic South Indian Cuisine in honour of the owner, Sudha Devauptapu’s grandmother. All the recipes are passed down from Devauptapu’s grandmother, Kamala Devi who lives in India. It’s as authentic as you can get.
As you walk in you are welcomed by smiling staff. The restaurant is very spacious with tables for various party sizes. The chandeliers and white accented furniture adds a unique and elegant touch to the dining experience.
Each table is equipped jars of spices and powders. The pickle spice was made and sent by Devi, as a blessing for her granddaughter’s newly opened restaurant. While chatting with Devauptapu she reinforced her grandmothers love for cooking and the belief that all dishes should be cooked from the heart. Trying the dishes on the menu, you’ll be able to sense the passion that Chef Devauptapu puts into her food.
Having never tried South Indian cuisine before we decided to start off our lunch trying the Andhra Style Green Chilli Dosa. Dosa is a staple dish in South Indian culture; it’s made with rice and lentil. The Dosa took up most of the plate but don’t let that fool you, it’s very light and crispy. The Andhra Style Dosa is made with crispy rice and lentil crepe that is filled with very spicy Andhra style green chilli masala powder. The dish came served with four chutneys: peanut, coconut, mint and ginger, with a side of sambar, a lentil vegetable soup. The plate was full of colour and amazing aromatic. The soup tasted like a dish your grandmother would make, great for those rainy days when you want a comforting meal.
After the Dosa we decided to try the Chapati with Aloo Curry, which is Indian whole-wheat flat bread — just like a roti — with spicy potato curry. This dish is quite similar to East Indian food; the spicy potato curry was very rich to the taste and had our mouths watering. However, it seemed like an element of dairy was needed to balance out the spice, possibly a savoury yogurt or a side of salad to enhance the taste with some freshly cut red onions. To end our lunch we tried the Gulab Jamun a spongy sweet dessert made with deep-fried flour soaked in rosewater scented syrup. Anyone with a rich sweet tooth will find these satisfying. They can be severed warm or cold, at Godvari they are served cold in a bowl.
Devauptapu’s passion for food and admiration for her grandmother are exemplified through her cooking. Overall, Godvari is a must try, the menu has a range of dishes, which vary in spice level. It’s a great place to take your family and friends for a lunch or dinner; they accommodate families with children with booster seats and even have kid’s specials on the menu.
The ambiance in the restaurant is unlike anything you’ll likely experience at any other Indian restaurant in Brampton. Though the restaurant is casual, the chandeliers and other decor really add an air of class. Godavari is great for hanging with friends, a business lunch or even date night.
