Arguably one of Brampton’s most successful artists, Alessia Cara took over the MTV Video Music Awards to perform her hit single ‘Scars to your Beautiful’.
Cara opened up the performance clad in a red gown to rival any Lady Gaga outfit and a bowl cut wig, not her usual style.
She quickly shed the initial outfit for something black tank and pants in keeping with her usual casual low-key style, and with the song’s message of self-love and acceptance beyond the surface appearance.
Cara belted out the song to a cheering crowd who sang right along with her.
‘Scars to your Beautiful’ was nominated for three VMAs, including Video of the Year, Best Fight Against the System and Best Direction, but it was her song ‘Stay’ a collaboration with Zedd that took home the win earlier in the night for Best Electronic Dance hit.
Cara also took to the stage later in the evening for a moving performance of ‘1-800-273-8255” alongside Logic, Khalid, an orchestra and attempt survivors.
