In a bid to make city hall run more efficiently, Brampton’s new CAO Harry Schlange eliminated 25 management positions at city hall.
In all,the 25 positions eliminated includes four department chiefs. Dennis Cutajar, Chief Operating Officer, Marilyn Ball, Chief of Planning, Peter Simmons, Chief of Corporate Services and Julian Patteson, Head of Public Services will all be replaced.
Of the 25 people let go, only five will be replaced, saving the city $2 million annually as of 2017. But $4 million in severance will need to be paid out this year.
A new crop of people are set to lead the city’s departments in a whole new structure that will cut layers and allow for more direct reporting to Schlange’s office.
The big changes haven’t come as a surprise. Schlange took over the position as CAO just a few short months ago with a mandate to restructure and change things at city hall.
The massive overhaul is in hopes that greater collaboration will happen across city departments and staff will have more opportunities to be innovative.
