Brampton Expands Traffic Safety Measures with 40 New Speed Cameras

Nov 06, 2024 – The City of Brampton is taking another significant step toward enhancing road safety by adding 40 new Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) cameras across the city. This latest deployment aligns with Brampton’s ambitious plan to reach a total of 185 ASE cameras by the end of summer 2025. These new installations bring the current ASE count to 110 cameras, making Brampton’s program one of the most extensive in Ontario.

Brampton’s rapid rollout of ASE technology sets a new standard for municipal road safety initiatives, outpacing other cities in the province. This expansion is part of the city’s ongoing strategy to curb speeding and improve safety on local streets, particularly in high-risk areas.

New ASE Camera Locations Across Brampton

The 40 new cameras have been strategically placed in various wards, including:

  • Ward 1: Ken Whillans Dr. (Near Mara Cres.)
  • Ward 2: Conservation Dr. (West of Dawnridge Trl.), Heart Lake Rd. (North of Copperfield Rd.)

Impact of ASE Cameras on Road Safety

Automated Speed Enforcement cameras utilize advanced technology to detect speeding vehicles and issue penalties. These systems are proven to be effective in reducing speeds and enhancing safety for all road users, especially in sensitive zones like school areas and residential streets.

Since launching the program, Brampton has seen an average speed reduction of 6.5 km/h across all camera locations, with some areas reporting decreases of up to 18 km/h. The city’s efforts have already led to significant changes in driver behaviour, contributing to safer streets.

However, excessive speeding remains a concern. For instance, an ASE camera on Heart Lake Road recently captured a vehicle traveling at a shocking 146 km/h in a 40 km/h school zone. Similarly, other cameras have recorded vehicles exceeding speed limits by as much as 90 km/h. These incidents highlight the need for continued enforcement to deter dangerous driving.

Brampton’s Broader Traffic Safety Strategy

The ASE initiative is part of Brampton’s broader traffic safety framework, which also includes:

  • Neighbourhood Speed Reduction Program: In response to over 2,400 complaints about aggressive driving, the city launched a pilot project to lower speed limits to 40 km/h in five neighbourhoods.
  • Community Safety Zones: Brampton has established 187 zones around schools, parks, and senior residences, where stricter speed enforcement is in place.
  • Additional Traffic-Calming Measures: These include flashing 40 km/h signs, pedestrian crosswalks, speed cushions, and enhanced signage to protect vulnerable road users.

ASE Ticket Scam Awareness

The City of Brampton is urging residents to be cautious of text message scams related to ASE tickets. Official ASE fines are never sent via text message but are instead mailed to the address linked to the vehicle’s license plate. The city advises against clicking on any suspicious links and recommends reporting such scams directly to Peel Regional Police by visiting a local station.
