February 22, 2024 – Mizanne Harris, a teacher at Chinguacousy Secondary School, isn’t your average educator. She’s also the driving force behind the school’s Aerospace Club, catering to students passionate about aviation.
Having worked in travel consultancy before immigrating to Canada, Mizanne developed a keen interest in aviation. Her experiences at Sunwing Airlines further fueled her determination to diversify the industry.
While many experts in aviation exist, Mizanne stands out. As a Jamaican-born Black woman, she challenges the industry’s traditional male dominance, making her a role model for many students, especially those from diverse backgrounds.
“I took a look around,” Mizanne says. “And I noticed that there were very few people who look like me in this industry. And I thought to myself, ‘this has to change’.”

Upon joining Peel District School Board, Mizanne noticed students’ interest in aviation, including many racialized students. This led to the birth of the Aerospace Club, providing insights into various aviation careers and inviting industry experts to guide students.
The club’s success has been remarkable, with 45 regular attendees last year and a waiting list. Mizanne’s vision includes partnering with the Brampton Flying Centre to offer pilot training opportunities to interested students.
“I am thrilled by the success of this program,” Mizanne says. “It demonstrates that students of all backgrounds can achieve success in this field and beyond.”
Under Mizanne Harris’ leadership, Chinguacousy’s Aerospace Club is soaring, empowering students to pursue their dreams in aviation.
