The Brampton teen who bravely rescued a 9-year-old girl from a house fire back in February has been awarded the Award of Valour by Brampton Fire and Emergency Services.

Sheldon Teague, 19, received the award at the city’s annual Citizens Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 24.

Teague was sleeping over at a friend’s house on February 14 when in the early morning hours he noticed smoke coming through the vents of the basement apartment.

When he heard screams, Teague leapt into action. He kicked down the door of the home located in the Dixie Rd and North Park area.

He called out to the occupants of the home, and spotted 9-year-old Zoya Kapadia trying to make her way out of the home. Teague rushed in, picked her up, and brought her to safety.

He tried to enter the house again but the out-of-control flames kept him back.

The girl’s sister and parents died in the fire which was later deemed an accident due to careless smoking.
