It’s time for Brampton Transit’s annual fall service changes, which includes most of the changes to bus service you can expect throughout the coming year. Riding a wave of higher than average growth, Brampton Transit is targeting an oft-lamented weakness for transit agencies everywhere: Sunday service.
Transit ridership continues to grow, as seen by our up-to-date chart below. Ridership to date (January to June) is already up by 17.42 per cent over last year’s ridership (a difference of almost three million riders).
Service on Sundays will start earlier and run later than normal, and in some cases, will match weekday frequencies. Extra Sunday service will be available on the following routes:
- 502 Zum Main: 12-minute frequencies between 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m
- 1/A Queen: One earlier eastbound trip from Mount Pleasant GO and one earlier westbound trip from Queen/50
- 2 Main: One earlier southbound trip from Heart Lake Terminal
- 3/A McLaughlin: One earlier trip and one later trip northbound from Brampton Gateway Terminal
- 4/A Chinguacousy: Service increased to every 20 minutes before 12:00 p.m. and every 15 minutes between 12:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.; one earlier southbound trip from Mount Pleasant GO and two earlier northbound trips from Brampton Gateway Terminal; two later northbound trips from Brampton Gateway Termina
- 7/A Kennedy: The “A” branch will be in service on the weekends; Sunday mid-day service increased to every 12.5 minutes; one earlier southbound trip from Heart Lake Terminal
- 11/A Steeles: One earlier eastbound trip from Brampton Gateway Terminal and one earlier westbound trip from Humber College; one later eastbound trip from Lisgar GO
- 14/A Torbram: One earlier southbound trip from Torbram/Father Tobin and two earlier northbound trips from Westwood Mall
- 15 Bramalea: One earlier southbound trip at Bramalea/Inspire and one earlier southbound trip at Bramalea Terminal
- 18/B Dixie: Two earlier southbound trips from Dixie/Inspire, one earlier southbound trip from Bramalea Terminal, and two earlier northbound trips from Dixie/Matheson
- 23 Sandalwood: Extended to Sandalwood Parkway and Veterans Drive; One earlier and later trip eastbound from Mount Pleasant GO; one earlier and two later westbound trips from Queen/50
- 30 Airport: Two earlier northbound trips from Westwood Mall
- 31 McVean: New Sunday service every 65 minutes between 8:53 a.m. and 6:40 p.m.
- 50 Gore Road: One earlier southbound trip from Gore Meadows Community Centre
- 115 Airport Express: One later northbound trip from Pearson Terminal 1
Big changes are coming to the most heavily used service, the 501/A/C Zum Queen and transit services around York University. The main branch which travels on Highway 7 via Vaughan Metropolitan Centre will no longer go to York University after servicing the subway station, instead, it will be turning back to Brampton.
The “A” branch will continue to service York University directly via Highway 407, and will see increased service during morning and afternoon rush hour, as well as mid-day. The “C” branch between Bramalea Terminal and York University will now only operate going westbound, and will see more service after 2:30 p.m.
Brampton Transit users that transfer to York Region Transit services at York University should be warned that the Toronto Transit Commission, via the agreement that the TTC and YRT signed regarding the subway extension, is forcing all YRT/VIVA routes that currently service York University to be shifted to Pioneer Village Station.
Anyone that transfers to the YRT’s 3 Thornhill, 20 Jane, 96 Keele-Yonge, 107/B Keele, and 165/F Weston at York should instead use the 501 Queen main branch and transfer along Highway 7 instead of at York (otherwise, you’re walking up to 10 minutes to get to the new YRT terminal at Pioneer Village Station). Riders that normally transfer to VIVA Purple should instead transfer onto VIVA Orange on Highway 7, as the former will no longer go west of Yonge Street.
After months of construction, the 505 Zum Bovaird will be realigned to service Zum stops on Airport Road between Bovaird Drive and Malton GO, no longer running express to Queen via Humberwest Parkway. New stops include: North Park/Cotrelle, Williams, Queen, Woodslea/Intermodal, Steeles, Morning Star, Derry, and Malton GO. Service frequencies will stay the same.
The 52 McMurchy will become a core alternative route to the 2 Main, running between Brampton Gateway Terminal and Downtown Brampton Terminal, no longer serving Peel Memorial.
In response to the changes to the 52, the 24 Van Kirk and 25 Edenbrook will both be extended to Peel Memorial. New routes 54 County Court and 56 Kingknoll will cover the neighbourhoods south of Steeles Avenue near between Sheridan College and County Court.
Changes are also coming to the rapidly growing Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. The 26 Mount Pleasant will be extended north, but also shifted to the western areas. New 35 minute Saturday service has been added. Additionally, the eastern areas of Mount Pleasant will be served on weekdays by the new 27 Robert Parkinson route.
Schedules are being adjusted slightly on 37 routes. Additional service is being added on the 502 Zum Main (more early evening and Saturday service), 4/A Chinguacousy (weekday mid-day and PM peak service, and Saturday service), and the 7/A Kennedy (more Saturday mid-day service).
For parents, you are getting relief in child (age 6-12) transit fares. Single-ride PRESTO trips are being reduced by 50 cents to $2.00. Weekly passes are being reduced to $22.00 and monthly passes are being reduced to $84.00.
