Brampton’s own Alessia Cara snagged her first gramophone at the 60th Grammy Awards on Sunday for Best New Artist of the Year.
“I’ve been pretend-winning Grammys since I was a kid, in my shower. So you’d think I’d have the speech thing down,” said Cara as she accepted her award. She thanked her mom, who was in the audience, and she also thanked her team.
Cara walked the red carpet looking sophisticated, but still maintaining her laid-back style in a black suit, white tee and a pair of Converse.
Cara was up against stiff competition for Best New Artist. All of the nominees —Khalid, Lil Uzi Vert, Julia Michaels and SZA are all coming off of successful years in the music business.
While it may have felt like Cara was snubbed during the 2017 show, nobody puts baby in a corner, because she nabbed four nominations for the show Sunday night — in addition to Best New Artist, she was nominated for Song of the Year and Best Music Video for Logic’s song “1-800-273-8255”, and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for her Zedd collab “Stay.”
Not only did she take home that W in one of the biggest categories of the night, Cara also took the stage to perform alongside Logic and Khalid.
So what’s next for Cara? She’s still coming to terms with her win. “I know it sounds really cliche, I didn’t expect this but I’m just such a huge fan of all the artists that were nominated so I would have been just as happy if they won,” she told the press. “I probably won’t process this for another seven years.”
She also told reporters at the show that’s she’s in the studio working hard on a new album. Spoiler alert: we can’t wait to hear it!
