It’s April 1, the province’s date for allowing the operation of retail cannabis stores, and Brampton—along with a very select group of other cities across Ontario—now has a legal pot shop.

The new store, Ganjika House, is now officially open on the city’s south side.

In early February The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) accepted its first round of candidates and Brampton had an application by CGS Foods Inc., the company that will be operating the shop.

As part of the application process residents had the opportunity to give feedback about the store. Ganjika House passed through the public consultation period and then prepared for its April 1 opening date.

Nearby cities including Mississauga, Markham, Oakville, and others voted ahead of the January 31 deadline not to allow cannabis stores in their cities.

Aside from Ganjika House, the closest legal cannabis retail stores to Brampton will be in Toronto and Hamilton. Other cities including London, Niagra Falls and Ottawa currently have applications as well.

Ganjika House is now open at 186 Main Street South.
