Brampton’s First Latin Bakery is Now Open

La Gran Uruguaya is a cozy little bakery that just popped up in the Kennedy Rd and Ardglen Drive area. It serves up fresh pastries, both sweet and savory, as well as other baked goods.

Co-owners Syndi Silvera and Jermaine Duhaney say the bakery was started to give Brampton an authentic Latin bakery, something lacking before La Gran opened its doors.

While the city didn’t yet have a full-fledged Latin American bakery until now, La Favorita, the city’s only Latin market, has its own small selection of delicious baked goods.

La Gran Uruguaya has a ton to offer. Its menu is extensive and heavily influenced by Uruguay which, given the name, is no surprise. This place is all about fresh, so batches of treats are baked every morning.

On the sweet side, La Gran has plenty to satisfy, including alfajores maicena, a sweet sandwich cookie with dulce de leche in the middle, borrachos, a drunken sponge cake, bolas de fraile, a sweet donut-like pastry dusted with sugar, and chaja, a sponge cake with peaches, whipped cream, dulce de leche and meringue.

The delectable selection doesn’t end there, the menu has plenty of savoury items too, including empanadas, tapas, sandwiches and more.

It also offers Italian and Portuguese buns and baguettes made fresh daily.

La Gran Uruguaya is located at 5 Ardglen Dr.
