The New Democrats have Elected Jagmeet Singh, a criminal defence lawyer from Brampton, to lead the party in the next federal election.

Singh got a whopping 53.6 per cent in the first round of leadership voting, which gave him a solid top spot on the ballot. He replaces Thomas Mulcair, who has been NDP party leader since 2012.

Singh announced the win Sunday on Twitter by thanking everyone in the party and noting that the time has begun to work towards being Prime Minister.

Singh’s campaign slogan “Love and Courage” has resonated with many Canadians. In fact, it was recently part of how he handled a racist heckler at a campaign event in Brampton.

Despite the heckler’s best efforts, Singh is now the first visible minority to be a party leader at the federal level in Canada. His parents are from India.
