The City of Brampton has officially broken ground on its third transit facility, marking a significant step in expanding its transit infrastructure. The event was attended by Mayor Patrick Brown, Regional Councillor Paul Vicente, MP Maninder Sidhu, and MPP Prabmeet Sarkaria. This new facility, the Cadetta Johnston Transit Facility, aims to enhance Brampton Transit’s capacity to meet the city’s growing needs.
Major Investment in Brampton’s Transit System
The facility, located at Highway 50 and Cadetta Road, is part of Phase One of a major project funded through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP). The project has secured $128.1 million from federal and provincial governments, with the City of Brampton contributing $154.8 million to complete this phase.
Named in honor of the Johnston family, who have historic ties to the area, the facility will initially house around 250 buses and is designed for future electrification pending additional funding. This aligns with Brampton’s sustainability goals, aiming for an 80% reduction in emissions compared to standard building codes, which will cut CO2e emissions by 1,320 tonnes annually.
Job Creation and Environmental Impact
The project is expected to create close to 1,000 jobs when fully operational. “Investments in public transit allow Canadians to access essential infrastructure more easily and affordably,” said MP Maninder Sidhu. Councillor Paul Vicente added, “By investing in transit infrastructure, we are making significant progress toward our environmental goals.”
Supporting Brampton’s Transit Growth
Brampton Transit continues to grow, with ridership exceeding pre-pandemic levels by over 40%. The new facility will support this growth, making it the fastest-growing big-city transit system in Canada. This project supports Brampton’s broader efforts to create a sustainable, efficient transit network.
