Drowning is one of the leading causes of accidental death in Canada. Since 2007 four people have accidentally drowned in Professor’s Lake alone.
To help make its residents safer, the City of Brampton has launched a new program to help people age 14 and older achieve a greater level of comfort in and around water.
In the program, students are taught how to roll, tread water, and float by certified instructors. Participants learn these skills during three one-hour sessions in the pool. Classes are completely free of charge and interested participants can register here. (Search “Swim to Survive” to find it.)
The sessions aren’t full fledged swimming class, but is meant to introduce people to water and train them to survive in emergency situations.
Once participants have completed the free Swim to Survive classes, the city recommends adults continue their swimming journey through one of their adult learn to swim programs.
