The Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) just made a decision that could allow the mega mall proposed by Osmington in Northwest Brampton to be built faster.
Currently, development in the Mount Pleasant Area does not include the mall, which falls into Heritage Heights, an area the city is working to decide the purpose of.
The decision will put the 1.2 million square foot mixed-use development that includes a mall, hotel, and other mixed-use development which may include restaurants and commercial space within the boundaries of the Mount Pleasant Secondary Plan.
The decision would allow Osmington to move forward much more quickly on the development. The project has faced multiple legal hurdles since it was proposed nearly 7 years ago.
Now that Osmington has overcome this one hurdle, it will focus on securing approvals for the proper zoning to move forward with the three-phase development. Phase 1 will include the 1.2 million-square-foot shopping centre. In later phases, it plans to build the hotel and commercial space.
Morguard, the owners of a number of properties in the area including Bramalea City Centre, have voiced some concerns over the project — those concerns will be heard by the OMB within the next year.
The project will cost a cool $1 billion to build and will bring 4,600 new jobs to the area.
