2018 Municipal Election Issues
Municipal Elections Act
- Council has until May 1, 2017 to host an open house and decide on whether to use ranked ballots for the 2018 election
- Shortened campaign period (May to election day)
- Shortened nomination period (May to fourth Friday of July)
- Council nominations now need 25 endorsements
- No more corporate or union donations
- New registration for third party advertisers who wish to oppose or encourage voting for specific candidates or referendum issues
- Unions/corporations may donate to third parties
- Candidate may not direct third parties
- Third parties are treated like candidates in terms of rules

2018 Election Method
- New method needs to be chosen and equipment bought, processes developed
- Two new voting methods for 2018 election
- Paper ballots that can be scanned, like a scantron device used for exams
- Internet voting for advanced voting dates, plus one paper ballot location at City Hall
