February 20, 2024 – The Extortion Investigative Task Force (EITF) achieved another breakthrough in their ongoing efforts to combat extortion in the Peel region. Their latest success involved the apprehension of a suspect linked to threats against a Brampton business owner and their family.
This comes on the heels of another major bust by the task force which saw four suspects arrested.
This investigation was launched by the EITF after receiving reports detailing threats made against the business owner. The suspect, identified as Hitesh Bansal, a 33-year-old from Brampton and a former employee, allegedly resorted to intimidation tactics, including threats of violence, to coerce the owner into shutting down their operations. These menacing communications, conveyed through phone calls and text messages, purported ties to criminal organizations, suggesting dire consequences if the owner refused to comply.
Responding promptly to the situation, the EITF swiftly identified and apprehended Bansal on February 12, 2024, in the city of Hamilton. Following his arrest, Bansal has been charged with three counts of Extortion and is currently being held in custody pending a bail hearing at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.
