Some Fireworks Allowed Without a Permit in Brampton on Victoria Day

A year ago the City of Brampton implemented new fireworks usage rules after an increase in fireworks-related fires over the past few years.

The new rules effectively banned the use of rocket-style fireworks. Any fireworks expected to travel more than 10 feet from the point of ignition are no longer allowed for consumer and residential use. This includes Roman candles, skyrockets, flying lanterns, and barrages.

The city now allows the use of short-range fireworks without a permit on private property on four occasions throughout the year — Canada Day, Victoria Day, Diwali and New Year’s Eve.

Short-range fireworks include fountains, ground spinners, wheels, sparklers and any other fireworks expected to travel less than 10 feet.

Fireworks can be used strictly on private property, not on city streets, sidewalks, schoolyards, in parks, or any other public property.

The city recommends the following safety precautions when using short-range fireworks:

  • Keep a container of water or a hose line that’s attached to a water supply available to extinguish fireworks
  • Never light a firework or hold a lit firework in your hand, other than a sparkler
  • After using sparklers, place them in a container of water to fully cool before disposal
  • Allow all fireworks to fully cool before disposal
