Let’s say you’ve got a great idea for a small business but you don’t know where you’re going to get the capital to get started. Don’t let financial concerns crush your dreams; there are several ways to obtain money if you’re looking to start a business, buy another business, or even expand an existing company.

Starter Company

The new, improved Starter Company program is called Starter Company Plus. It’s a great resource for budding business owners over 18 years of age.

In this program you’ll receive not only the training and business skills you need to help run or grow your own business, you’ll also get advice and mentorship from local business leaders.

Better still, you can apply for a grant of up to $5,000. You’ll also gain something even more valuable than money: experience running a business that will better position you to get more traditional financing, such as a bank loan, if you need one in the future.

Getting started with Starter Company is as simple as contacting the Brampton Entrepreneur Centre (BEC) to register your interest in the program, confirm your eligibility, and pick up the required application and business plan template. This page has all the eligibility and application info that you’ll need.

Summer Company

If you’re currently a student between the ages of 15 and 29, consider taking advantage of the Summer Company program.

Summer Company offers up to a $3,000 grant and provides valuable training, mentoring, and coaching for students who are residents of Brampton. You’ll also get to enjoy the pride that accompanies the experience of being your own boss.

Although the deadline has passed for this year, get inspiration for next summer by reading the stories of some recent Summer Company alumni on the City of Brampton website. For more details on the program, check out the Summer Company section of the Government Ontario website.

All of the above involves the Brampton Entrepreneur Centre, which also has many helpful resources for those interested in learning more.
