Whether you looking to complete your 40 volunteer hours for high school or you just want to #GiveBack to the community this list is sure to give you some ideas to get involved in and around the city.

1. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Peel

You can make a positive difference in a child’s life by mentoring a few times a month. You will be placed with a child who is younger than you to spend time with. By mentoring you are teaching life skills, role modeling and creating a very important bond. You can teach your child all you’ve learned about life and maybe learn some new things yourself! Note that you must be willing to participate for at least a year.

2. CleanUp Brampton

Brampton’s trails and streets can get pretty grimy and by volunteering you’ll contribute to making the city more inviting. Volunteers will be responsible for noting where current garbage cans are placed and patrolling city trails to help monitor and keep them clean. This is an initiative hoping to be completed by the end of the summer where a report of the volunteer’s findings will be sent to the municipal government.

3. Brampton Animal Services

While volunteering at the animal shelter you’ll get to play with the cats, walk the dogs, fundraise and help with animal rehabilitation. You will get lots of quality time with the animals, meet new people and even gain future career insight if you’re looking to work with animals. Keep in mind you must be at least 16 to volunteer.

4. A local Food Bank

Brampton has several food banks including Ste Louise Outreach Centre and Knights Table. They all rely heavily on community donations and volunteers.  You could be doing anything from sorting donations to on-site maintenance. Ste Louise Outreach allows volunteers to show up and help out whenever they operate and Knights Table has some application forms they would like volunteers to fill out first.

5. Brampton Theatre Volunteers

If you have a love for the arts this may be the perfect place for you to volunteer. The Brampton Theatres are looking for volunteers who are great with people, are at least 16 and can commit to three shifts per month. You could be placed at Rose Theatre Brampton, Garden Square, Lester B. Pearson Theatre or Cyril Clark Library Lecture Hall.

6. Peel Long Term Care Centres

You can earn your hours or just help out by volunteering your time to a care centre. Volunteering includes joining in on community outings, helping with programming, visiting residents one-on-one and much more. This is a great way to give back to the  seniors in our community.

7. Brampton Library

Book lovers rejoice! You can volunteer at any of the six Brampton libraries doing a number of different tasks. Youths have the opportunity to volunteer as program assistants, reading buddies and even join the teen council. Adults who want to volunteer have the options of being a reading buddy, delivering books to homebound readers and joining the senior library council.

8. Habitat for Humanity

Help people in need with this hands-on volunteer opportunity. Habitat for Humanity looks for volunteers to help build homes for families going through difficult financial times. You can also volunteer at one of their stores handling donations, helping with customer service or lending your time to any of their local events.

9. Brampton Civic Hospital

Get a feel for the medical environment by volunteering at the hospital, as long as you’re 15 or older! You could be helping out in patient care, support services, fundraising or working in different specialized positions. This is a great way to gain tangible experience in the workplace and give back to your community.

10. Sunshine Foundation

Sunshine is a Canadian charity that fulfills the dreams of children with serious physical disabilities and life-threatening illnesses.  They have several chapters across the country including one in Peel/Halton. You can lend a hand at one of their events and work with different families to make dreams come true.

11. PLASP Child Care Services

If you love working with children, this is the place for you! PLASP offers a variety of volunteer opportunities in their programs working with children. As a PLASP offers people the opportunity to gain tangible skills by providing skill building workshops and training as they volunteer.  They also offer volunteer opportunities in their head office.
