You can’t travel more than a kilometre in Brampton without hearing a language other than English, spotting a beloved ethnic restaurant or bumping into at least a dozen people from far-reaching parts of the globe.
Recent census data revealed that more than half of the people living in Brampton are among the 7.5 million people who have immigrated to Canada from elsewhere.
While about 86 per cent of Bramptonians are Canadian citizens, a little over 300,000 of us have come from other countries.
Currently, 73 per cent of Brampton’s population identifies as a visible minority, making it the second most diverse community in the Greater Toronto Area, just behind Markham.
Brampton has seen the biggest jump among GTA cities in people identifying as visible minorities, growing from 66.4 per cent in 2011.
As for where people are immigrating from? India, Jamaica, Pakistan and the Philippines are holding strong at the top of the list.
