November 29, 2023 – Hamas has extended an invitation to Elon Musk, CEO of SpaceX and owner of the social media platform X, to visit Gaza.
Musk’s recent visit to Israel and his declaration that it is “dangerous” in Gaza right now have sparked a flurry of reactions. The tech billionaire, known for his ventures in space exploration and electric vehicles, expressed concern about the current situation in Gaza but acknowledged the importance of a prosperous future for the region.
Invite from Hamas to Musk
The invitation, issued by senior Hamas official Osama Hamdan, comes in the aftermath of Israel’s military actions in the region. Hamas is urging Musk to witness the aftermath of what they describe as “massacres and destruction” caused by Israel’s military operations. Hamdan, in a press conference in Beirut, emphasized the need for Musk to gain a more comprehensive perspective by visiting Gaza.
The official stated, “We invite him to visit Gaza to see the extent of the massacres and destruction committed against the people of Gaza, in compliance with the standards of objectivity and credibility.” Hamdan highlighted the significant impact of the conflict, stating that within 50 days, more than 40,000 tonnes of explosives were dropped on the homes of Gazans.
Musk meets Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
Musk’s recent visit to Israel included a stop at the Kfar Aza kibbutz, targeted by Hamas gunmen during the October 7 attack, joined by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Musk expressed shock at the devastation and declared his commitment to combating hatred. Following the visit, Musk and Netanyahu engaged in an X Spaces conversation, during which they expressed mutual agreement that Hamas needs to be eradicated.
Starlink Access to Gaza: A Controversial Agreement
During his visit, Musk also reached an agreement related to his satellite company, Starlink, stating that its units would only operate in Israel with the approval of the Israeli Ministry of Communications, including the Gaza Strip.
This development marks a stark departure from Musk’s previous musings in October when he suggested that Starlink could support connectivity to internationally recognized aid organizations in Gaza.
The October communication blackout in Gaza prompted social media users to appeal to Musk for Starlink access, highlighting the technology’s ability to provide connectivity through satellite technology even in regions facing infrastructure challenges.
Israel has opposed Starlink connectivity for Gaza, citing concerns that Hamas might exploit it for “terrorist activities.” Musk’s agreement now adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing debate surrounding technology, humanitarian aid, and the geopolitics of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Criticism of Musk’s Trip
Criticism has surrounded Musk’s social media platform X, with accusations of hosting anti-Semitic content. The backlash led to corporate giants, including Apple and IBM, withdrawing advertisements from the platform, potentially costing X millions of dollars.
Musk’s decision to back Israel’s actions and his agreement regarding Starlink access have fueled controversy. The visit, criticized by some as a “PR visit,” has raised questions about Musk’s stance on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
Musk’s Response
On the day the Starlink agreement with Israel was solidified, Musk posted on X: “Actions speak louder than words.” This enigmatic message appears to directly address the criticisms and controversies swirling around his visit. The significance of this pivotal agreement, beneficial not only to Israel but also laying the groundwork for aid in Gaza, challenges any skepticism about the authenticity of Musk’s support for Israel and his commitment to fostering a prosperous future for Gaza. It becomes increasingly evident that Musk’s actions carry a genuine weight, debunking any notion that his involvement is merely a calculated public relations maneuver.
