The busiest and largest highway in Ontario will be getting a whole lot bigger in the future as part of Ontario’s new Highway 401 Project.
Infrastructure development group Aecon has just closed a big $639.8 million deal with builders and the Ministry of Transportation for the addition of six new lanes for Ontario’s Highway 401. This new addition will extend the highway from its six-lane configuration to twelve lanes, including carpool lanes, in both directions.
The Ontario Government says that the new addition of six lanes to the 401 will be great news for all drivers who travel along this highway every day. “Widening the highway will relieve congestion, allow for more efficient transportation and flow of goods, and help accommodate continued population and employment growth in the region,” according to a government press release.
Aecon and its partners will also be working on other facets of the highway which include bridges, drainage, lighting, signage, carpool lots and ecological restoration. Construction is set to start towards the end of the year with plans to finish by late 2022.
