Celebrity chef and culinary wizard Jason Rosso has chosen Brampton to set up his new urban-style eatery.
27 years ago, at the beginning of his culinary journey, Jason started as a line-cook working at 341 Main Street North, the very same location where J. Red & Co now stands.

His 30 years of experience have come together to offer Brampton the best in Canadian eclectic cuisine and has set a completely new standard for food in the city.Jason has made a variety of television appearances over the years on shows like Recipe To Riches, Restaurant Makeover and The Marilyn Denis Show. He’s also cooked at some of the best and most successful restaurants in Canada including Sassafraz, The Distillery Restaurants Corp and Milestones.
His classic training in french cuisine, love for ethnic fare and his extensive experience cooking all over the world shines in the restaurant’s menu of farm fresh, upscale comfort food classics with bold flavours and unexpected twists.
The restaurant setting — a rustic urban feel — is perfect for any occasion. Choose from a comfy booth or large pub style reclaimed wood tables, perfect for gatherings big and small.

The diverse menu features quite a few foods you’ve likely tried before — with a Rosso twist of course — sammies and burgs, a handful of hand pressed prime angus beef burgers, some lighter options for the healthy crowd and some big plates. Though familiar, the menu items really have been elevated to a whole new level, with creatively paired combinations and complex flavour profiles. We started off our culinary adventure with the mac and cheese samosas accompanied by a spicy ketchup. This menu item was created by none other than Rick Matharu, Brampton’s resident samosa guru. It didn’t disappoint. Only a genius could have foreseen this epic flavour combination.
J. Red’s entree game is on point. We had a difficult time narrowing down exactly what we wanted to try first. In the end, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity for a good chicken and waffles. This dish is one you’ll want to keep going back to try. It features a free range battered chicken with fluffy herb house baked waffles and a creamy, maple and garlic sauce. The flavours were well-balanced and downright delicious.
We also tried Jason’s signature dish, the Thai Fighter, and it doesn’t get any more authentically Thai than this. It features Thai noodles tossed with shrimp, chicken and Asian veggies in a creamy coconut basil sauce. It’s a dish Jason begged a street food vendor in Thailand to teach him, after asking for the recipe for a month, the vendor finally taught him how to recreate it. The complex flavours of this dish were reminiscent of a savoury red thai curry.
One of the restaurant’s most impressive offerings is their authentic wood fired pizzas or wood fired zaaaas, as they like to call them. We enjoyed the Eh’loha a thin-crust pie with honey ham, smoked mozzarella, roasted pineapples and double smoked bacon. The all-important crust was thin, soft in the middle and slightly crispy around the edges. It was spot-on.
We ended the evening on a sweet note with a pot of angel food cake smothered in a strawberry chutney and mint syrup, topped with sweet whipped cream. The mint added complexity to the strawberry chutney. The only disappointment here is that it was served cold instead of warm. Delicious nonetheless.
The diverse menu features flavours from all over the world and it’s difficult to nail down exactly what their specialty is. Every bite was delicious. They offer a custom-made bento box option for lunch and a delicious brunch on weekends. That’s right, Brampton finally has a legitimate place to grab a full brunch! (We’re pretty excited about that).
No doubt, J. Red & Co will be well worth plenty of re-visits to try the sammies and burgs, some more of the wood fired pizzas and many of the other delectable menu items we didn’t get to this time around.
