February 16, 2024 – At the recent Learners Early Access Program (LEAP) graduation ceremony, 50 Peel District School Board (PDSB) Grade 11 and 12 students marked a significant milestone. These students, who participated in the partnership between PDSB and Algoma University, earned their first university credits and are now gearing up for their next academic journey.
Launched in September 2023, LEAP offers a unique opportunity for public high school students. For one semester, students attend classes at Algoma University’s Brampton campus, simultaneously completing their high school curriculum alongside university courses. The program prioritizes historically underrepresented groups, such as Indigenous and Black students.
Algoma University President Asima Vezina emphasized LEAP’s role in nurturing students’ confidence and enthusiasm for higher education: “with courses like Unity virtual reality and app design, we’re getting them excited about how university education will lead to great jobs and bright futures.”
President Vezina went on to say it was the City of Brampton that first asked for a ‘local option’ for university access and this is the solution. “Having a university campus right here in Brampton’s downtown is changing people’s lives.”
The impact of LEAP extends beyond academic preparation. Rashmi Swarup, Director of Education at PDSB, noted a palpable sense of optimism and readiness among the students: “Now, when they step into post-secondary environments, they’ll feel confident and more prepared to take advantage of all opportunities on offer, and that’s exactly what we want to see as an outcome from this program.”
The program aims to equip students with the skills and mindset necessary to seize opportunities in post-secondary environments.
LEAP Bursary
Of the graduating Grade 12 cohort, nearly all have applied to universities for fall 2024, with a significant portion choosing Algoma University. To support these students and future LEAP participants, Algoma University introduced the LEAP Bursary, providing financial assistance totaling $6,000 over two years.
LEAP students benefit from dedicated facilities and access to campus resources, including tutoring services and mental health support. With a new cohort set to join in February, the program is poised for further growth and impact.
