Magna has received $23.6 million in grants from the Ontario government to create additional high-quality jobs in the region with ongoing training and development programs for employees. The new and expanded operations are expected to bring more than 1,000 new jobs to Ontario over the next few years.
Magna has 49 manufacturing facilities with more than 18,500 employees throughout Canada. Magna was named one of Canada’s Best Employers 2023 and Fortune’s Worlds Most Admired Companies.
The Brampton facility is a 490,000 square-foot leased facility to manufacture battery enclosures for electric vehicles, and operations are expected to begin in Q2 2023. Roughly 560 new jobs are expected to be created at full production.
This investment represents a show of confidence in the growing strength and resilience of Ontario’s auto sector. Magna’s decision to expand in six locations across the province strengthens EV supply chains in Ontario.
Representing the City at the announcement, Economic Development Chair Gurpartap Singh Toor said in the City’s release, “the City of Brampton’s manufacturing sector continues to solidify its position in the electric vehicle revolution by attracting new investment and growing our businesses in the automotive supply chain. With the electrification of the Brampton Stellantis assembly plant and Magna’s new facility to build battery component trays for electric vehicles, Brampton is the right place to invest in jobs of the future.”
Magna’s expansion in Brampton is the largest of the six investments announced, creating 560 new advanced manufacturing jobs. The company is opening a 490,000 sq. ft. facility at 100 Ace Dr., which will manufacture battery trays for electric vehicles, bolstering the city’s innovation and advanced manufacturing sectors.
The investment builds on the City of Brampton’s ongoing support for its well-established automotive and parts manufacturing sector. The Stellantis assembly plant, which employs more than 2,000 people in Brampton, will begin retooling and modernizing toward the company’s electric vehicle future at the end of 2024.
