Osler’s Healthcare Hero Joyce Asabere Brings Light

February 20, 2024 – Joyce Asabere, Assistant Manager of the Clinical Resource Team at Osler, is being recognized as a shining example of excellence in healthcare. As the recipient of the 2023 Excellence Value Award, Joyce stands out among her peers for her dedication and compassion.

“I just want to help and do good,” Joyce says, summing up her motivation for her work. Her commitment to making a positive impact is evident in every aspect of her role. Whether it’s caring for patients, supporting their families, or collaborating with colleagues, Joyce consistently goes above and beyond.

Originally working as a Transitional Care Coordinator (TCC), Joyce’s exceptional contributions did not go unnoticed. Despite her humility, Joyce was nominated and selected for the Excellence Award, a testament to her outstanding service.

In her interactions with patients and families, Joyce prioritizes clear communication, recognizing the diverse cultural backgrounds within Osler’s communities. Osler serves one of the most culturally diverse geographic areas in the country with many languages represented.

‘Technology is a gamechanger’

Utilizing tools like video interpretation and language lines on iPads, she ensures everyone receives the support they need, even facilitating connections between patients and their families abroad.

Joyce recounts one example where she connected an elderly patient who broke their hip with their family in Eastern Europe who were trying to find her: “I arranged for her to call her family … and let them know that she was in the hospital and had had surgery,” said Joyce. “She was so happy, she was crying.”

Joyce emphasizes the importance of seeing patients as whole individuals, not just their illnesses. “Just being there, talking to them, hearing them, makes a huge difference,” she explains. Her attentive approach to care encompasses both physical and emotional well-being, focusing on the little things that can make a big difference.

Now, as Assistant Manager of the Clinical Resource Team, Joyce continues to embody the values of excellence and compassion. Her dedication to making a meaningful difference in people’s lives remains unwavering.

“To be that person who brings a bright light, that makes a difference in someone’s life—that really is what motivates me,” Joyce reflects. For her, the reward lies in knowing she has made a positive impact, reaffirming the profound connection between doing good and feeling good.
