New Winter Exhibits
Step into history at the ‘Behind the Bars: The History of the Peel County Jail‘ exhibit, a poignant exploration curated by Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA). Unveiling the 110-year tapestry of Peel County Jail, the exhibit takes visitors on a thoughtful and compassionate journey, shedding light on the stories of those who once walked within its walls. More than a mere glimpse into the past, ‘Behind the Bars’ invites participants to contribute their perspectives through an anonymous survey, fostering a collective understanding of the jail’s impact. This exhibition, backed by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, stands as a testament to PAMA’s commitment to engaging narratives that resonate with our shared history.
Embark on an emotional and thought-provoking journey through ‘The Suitcase Project‘ exhibit, a compelling showcase brought to Peel Art Gallery, Museum and Archives (PAMA) from the Nikkei National Museum and Cultural Centre. Running from January 27 to September 8, 2024, this traveling exhibition delves into a dark chapter of Canadian history, focusing on the forced displacement of over 23,000 Japanese Canadians during 1942. Over 80 fourth- and fifth-generation Japanese Canadians and Americans share poignant reflections on what they would pack if uprooted from their homes today, echoing the experiences of their predecessors. Assembled within one day, much like their ancestors in 1942, the exhibit emphasizes not only what people would take but also what they are forced to leave behind. The Suitcase Project serves as a powerful reminder of historical struggles, offering a lens through which to understand the enduring impact on Japanese Canadians and Americans today.
