“Terrorizing our residents will not be tolerated”: Peel Police Launch Task Force Against Extortion Threats

December 22, 2023 – Peel Regional Police is tackling a rising wave of extortion attempts, primarily targeting members of the South Asian business community. These perpetrators leverage social media platforms to intimidate victims, demanding money under threats of violence – which has already escalated to actual violence in some cases.

In a recent incident on December 9, 2023, Tanmanjot Gill, a 23-year-old from Abbotsford, B.C., was apprehended for discharging a firearm near Rutherford Road South and Clark Boulevard in Brampton. Police are actively seeking a second suspect, described as a medium-built South Asian male, initially wearing a grey sweatshirt and later switching to a black sweatshirt with a distinctive white X on the back. If spotted, dial 9-1-1 immediately, and do not approach, as the suspect may be armed.

In response to these concerning events, Peel Regional Police has swiftly introduced the Extortion Investigative Task Force (EITF). This dedicated team, comprising investigative and intelligence units, bolstered by tactical support, aims to collaborate with the community and other law enforcement agencies on ongoing investigations.

Chief Nishan Duraiappah voiced the urgency, stating, “Terrorizing our residents will not be tolerated, and Peel Regional Police will devote the resources to pursue those who are responsible. This has caused grave safety and security concerns among our community members.”
