February 15, 2024 – Last summer, members of the 22 Division Community Intervention and Response Team (CIRT) launched “Project Order,” a strategic initiative to tackle illegal street-level activities in downtown Brampton.
“Our goal with the community safety and well-being initiative is that we want to eliminate risks in the community before it harms them,” says Peel Regional Police Chief, Nishan Duraiappah.
The CIRT officers, part of a newly formed unit, intensified their presence in downtown Brampton, aiming to deter and reduce illegal activities while fostering relationships with local businesses and residents. The CIRT team is made up of bicycle and foot patrol officers.

“We heard from business owners and residents in downtown Brampton and moved to address their concerns of repeated illegal activity in the area,” explains Chief Duraiappah.
Project Order yielded significant results:
- 50 Arrest Warrants were executed, leading to the apprehension of individuals involved in various criminal activities.
- 20 Controlled Drug and Substance Act (CDSA) Arrests were made, contributing to the crackdown on illegal drug trafficking.
- 40 Liquor License Act/Trespass to Property Provincial Offence Notices (PON) were issued, enforcing regulations and deterring further violations.
- 2 Criminal Code Search Warrants were executed, enabling law enforcement to gather crucial evidence for prosecution.
- A total of $30,000 worth of drugs were seized, including fentanyl, cocaine, and crack cocaine, making a significant dent in the local drug trade.
“Our practices are intended to decrease reoffending,” Chief Duraiappah emphasizes.
The success of Project Order underscored the effectiveness of collaboration between law enforcement, community partners, and local businesses.
“It’s another example of how we can work together in our community to deliver strong results,” Chief Duraiappah praises.
Project Order has also lead to the pilot CIRT unit being made permanent and now rolled out across all of Peel Region – not just Brampton.
