January 22, 2024 – High school students in the Peel Region are in for a thrilling summer as Peel Regional Police opens applications for the 2024 Youth in Policing Initiative (YIPI) program. This initiative, funded by the Ministry of Children Community Social Services and Peel Police Service Board, aims to forge positive connections with the region’s youth while providing valuable policing experiences through summer employment.
Having kicked off its inaugural YIPI program in 2009 with just ten students, Peel Regional Police has since expanded its reach. The 2023 program witnessed a significant growth spurt through a strategic partnership with Sheridan College. This collaboration not only offered on-campus space but also brought in-class lectures from various college departments, providing a sneak peek into post-secondary education.

What’s in Store for YIPI Participants?
The eight-week summer employment opportunity is designed to provide youth, aged 15 to 18, with a comprehensive understanding of policing and community outreach. Throughout the program, participants can anticipate engaging workdays starting at 8 a.m. and concluding at 4 p.m., reporting to various Peel Regional Police divisions, including the Airport and Sheridan College. Transportation is provided during working hours, and participants are responsible for their transport at the beginning and end of the day.
The program incorporates classroom instruction covering a diverse range of policing topics, offering participants the opportunity to earn credentials upon successful completion. An integral part of the YIPI experience includes police drill sessions aimed at promoting self-discipline, alertness, precision, pride, and teamwork. As participants navigate this enriching journey, they will also be issued a branded T-shirt, emphasizing their involvement in this unique program. The YIPI program seeks to instill valuable skills, foster personal growth, and provide insights into the world of policing, creating a memorable and transformative summer for all involved.

Eligibility
The program is exclusively available to individuals aged 15 to 18 years who are actively attending high school within the Region of Peel and hold residency within the same area. Prospective candidates must also be legally permitted to work in Canada, ensuring compliance with employment regulations. Furthermore, a crucial criterion mandates that applicants possess a clean criminal record, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a positive background. The stringent yet essential eligibility requirements aim to select individuals who not only reflect the cultural diversity of Peel Region but also exhibit the qualities necessary for a successful and enriching experience within the YIPI program.
