12 Arrested, 81 Charges Laid – Range Rovers, Bentleys, and BMWs Recovered valued at $1.2 million
November 29 – In a groundbreaking operation, Peel Regional Police have dealt a crippling blow to a sophisticated auto theft ring that had been wreaking havoc on the streets of Peel Region. Project Memphis, launched in March 2023, uncovered a nefarious network involved in re-vinning stolen luxury vehicles, fraudulently re-registering them, and attempting to deceive financial and insurance institutions.

Chief Nishan Duraiappah hailed Project Memphis as a “complex and multi-faceted investigation that required incredible investigative efforts,” emphasizing the effective collaboration between law enforcement agencies and organizations determined to disrupt criminal activities.
The results of this intensive operation are nothing short of staggering:
- 12 Individuals Arrested and 81 Charges Laid: The perpetrators, ranging from 23 to 36 years old, were slapped with charges including trafficking in stolen goods, fraud over $5000, conspiracy to commit, and more.
- 9 Stolen Vehicles Recovered Valued at Over $1.2 Million: Luxury vehicles, including 2 Range Rover Sports, 1 Bentley Bentayga, and a BMW M5, were among the prized possessions snatched back from the clutches of criminals.
- Over $350,000 Insurance Fraud Prevented: The meticulously planned operation thwarted attempts by the accused to defraud financial and insurance institutions, saving an estimated $350,000 in potential losses.

The Collaborative Force Behind Success:
This victory against organized crime was made possible through the concerted efforts of multiple agencies:
- Peel Regional Police Commercial Auto Crime Unit: At the forefront of the investigation, the PRP Commercial Auto Crime Unit spearheaded the operation, ensuring a swift and effective crackdown on criminal activities.
- CBSA Intelligence, Ontario Motor Vehicle Industry Council (OMVIC), Equite Association, Durham Regional Police, and Woodstock Police: A joint effort involving these agencies played a pivotal role in the success of Project Memphis, showcasing the power of collaboration in combating criminal enterprises.
The accused have been charged and released with conditions, awaiting their appearance at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton. As Peel Region breathes a sigh of relief, the dismantling of this auto theft ring serves as a stark warning to criminals attempting to exploit the streets. Project Memphis stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment of law enforcement and associated organizations in safeguarding the community against organized criminal activities.
