Project Speedbump: Massive Street Racing Bust, Dozen Arrested

February 27, 2024 – The results of Project Speed Bump, a two-day initiative targeting street racing as part of the large Project ERASE, have been released.

Last November, street racers caused chaos in the Region of Peel, prompting the Safer Roads Team to take action. Around 100-150 vehicles were involved in dangerous driving activities across multiple locations.

On November 18, the Safer Roads Team spotted the racers and identified several drivers for various offenses. The next day, the racers returned, causing a collision on American Drive in Mississauga involving a Corvette and a BMW.

The Corvette driver, a 21-year-old from Markham, faces charges including Dangerous Operation and Racing a Motor Vehicle multiple times. The BMW driver, a 19-year-old from Toronto, was also charged with Dangerous Operation and Racing of a Motor Vehicle multiple times.

After the collision, the racers moved to Highway 427 North at Finch Ave West, blocking traffic for over 25 minutes. The Safer Roads Team intervened, leading to the identification and arrest of some participants.

Following these incidents, Project Speedbump was launched, resulting in 31 arrests and a total of 122 charges, including 53 Criminal Code Charges and 69 Highway Traffic Act Charges.
