Meet & Greet with Brampton players and athletes Acheampong, Smith and Metchie on January 20.
January 14, 2023 – The 109th Grey Cup Champions, the 2022 Toronto Argonauts, and the Grey Cup, are coming to the City of Brampton on January 20.
The event will include a meet and greet with Brampton players and former Brampton Bulldog athletes Robbie Smith and Sam Acheampong.
Taking place at City Hall from 6-8PM, there will be free Argos themed sweets and drink by local Brampton businesses, remarks from Mayor Brown, Sam Acheampong and Robbie Smith, and free printed photos with the Grey Cup, Acheampong and Smith.
On Sunday, November 20, 2022, at the 109th Grey Cup in Regina, Saskatchewan, the Toronto Argonauts defeated the two-time defending champion Winnipeg Blue Bombers 24-23, bringing home Canadian football’s top prize.

Three players with connections to Brampton were a part of this Championship team:
Sam Acheampong
Sam was selected in the second round, 20th overall in the 2020 CFL Draft. In the 2022 season, he played 16 games, finished the season with 19 defensive tackles, a special teams tackle, a sack, and a fumble recovery. In the playoffs he recorded a tackle in Eastern Final win over Montreal. He attended Wilfrid Laurier University and played 31 regular-season games, recording 53 career tackles, adding 11.5 sacks and 19.5 tackles for loss. Named a First Team OUA All-Star in 2019. He had a 2 sack, 2 TFL game against Queen’s in his final year at Laurier. Sam also attended Cardinal Ambrozic Catholic Secondary School in Brampton where he played offensive line throughout high school.

Robbie Smith
Robbie was drafted in the second round, ninth overall, in the 2019 CFL Draft. In the 2021 season, he played 14 games, made 24 tackles, 6 special teams tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble. In the playoffs he had 1 tackle and 1 special teams tackle in Eastern Final loss to Hamilton. In College he played 4 years at Wilfrid Laurier University and played 30 regular-season games plus 6 more in the playoffs. In 2017 he finished with 27.5 tackles and 10.5 sacks. He also forced 3 fumbles and knocked down 4 passes. An OUA All-Star in 2017 and 2018. A key member of the Hawks 2016 Yates Cup championship team. In 2017 he set a school record with a 4.5-sack game against Queen’s and was named USPORTS Defensive Player of the Week. Robbie also attended St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School and played for the Brampton Bulldogs OVFL team.

Royce Metchie
Royce was acquired by the Calgary Stampeders and traded to the Argonauts on February 4, 2022. In the 2021 season, he played 7 games, and finished the season with 31 tackles, an interception, and a forced fumble. He attended St. Edmund Campion in Brampton and was born in Lagos, Nigeria.
