The city of Brampton urges drivers to check their speeds on neighbourhood streets.

During a recent meeting, Brampton City Council approved a report proposed by traffic operations technologist Radoslaw Moryc. The report was taken from the city’s Neighbourhood Traffic Management Guide, including traffic calming measures.

Three of the most dangerous street stretches are:

  1. Centre Street North, between Williams Parkway and Queen Street East
  2. Vodden Street West, between Main Street North and Williams Parkway
  3. Royal Orchard Drive, between Bovaird Drive West and Williams Parkway

The report contains 102 streets listed by a weighted point system of factors including: “traffic volume, speed, cut-through traffic, average number of collisions over three years, presence or absence of school frontage parks, sidewalks and other pedestrian generators,” said Moryc in the report.

These 40 km/h stretches, during normal traffic-flow conditions, register 85 per cent of vehicles travelling over the speed limit between 53 to 57 km/h, with 15 per cent travelling over that speed.

They have as many as 7,000 vehicles daily, with a cut-through rate of 26 to 45 per cent, and an average collision rate of eight per kilometre stretch per year.

The city’s traffic-calming plan in 2018 for the stretch on Richvale Drive from Kennedy to Bovaird has already yielded positive results. Average speeds decreased by 2 km/h and 9 km/h on Richvale Drive North and Richvale Drive South, respectively.

The measures on Richvale include new raised and painted centre median islands, and pavement marking to indicate road narrowing and horizontal deflection.

As it relates to collisions, the stretch of Nelson Street West between George Street North and McMurchy Avenue North has the most, with an average of 12.2 crashes per year.
