Stay Woke is an open mic event for youth throughout the GTA who are passionate about social and global issues.
The initiative was started last year by two grade 12 students, Bianca Modi and Maliha Bhutta-Khan, who held the event at PAMA. Over 60 people attended the inaugural event and they expect 90 or more this year.
Issues range from such topics as mental health, racism and discrimination, feminism, empowerment, personal experiences, and the environment. Issues can be presented as speeches, powerpoint presentations, spoken word, poetry, art, dramatic presentation, videos and singing/rapping.
Modi and Khan’s initiative stems from their combined passion for social justice and advocacy. They want to be able to give all youth a platform to voice their opinions and build their confidence while also building a community of future leaders.
The event will be held once again at PAMA on June 4th from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Tickets are $6 and can be purchased at www.staywokeevent.com.
