December 2, 2023 – Premier Doug Ford has issued a stern warning to Liberal MPs in Brampton, emphasizing the crucial importance of supporting the swift development of Highway 413. In a passionate address to the Brampton Board of Trade, Ford underscored the potential political repercussions for MPs who fail to back the project, pointing to past election outcomes as a cautionary tale.

With a sense of urgency, Ford stressed that the region is on the brink of a transportation crisis. “It is expected, in the next decade, without a new highway, all the major highways in the Region – including the 407 – will be, or exceed, capacity during rush hour,” he declared. Ford went on to highlight the grim prediction that by 2051, travel times on the main stretch of the 401 could double, resulting in billions of dollars in economic losses annually due to increased gridlock.

In contrast, Ford positioned Highway 413 as a vital solution to these challenges, asserting that it would reduce travel times by 30 minutes each way. However, he expressed frustration with what he sees as unnecessary delays imposed by the federal government, stating, “Unfortunately, because of the federal government, this highway is needlessly stalled.”

Directing his message squarely at Brampton’s Liberal MPs, Ford issued a blunt ultimatum: “Get on board, get onside, let us get building Highway 413. If someone else beats you supporting this project, if you’re left having to defend yourself stopping this project, the next federal election, you’ll soon be out of a job.” He drew parallels to past elections, reminding them of the fate of candidates who opposed Highway 413 in Brampton, stating, “Just look at what happened when Highway 413 worked out for the Liberal and NDP candidates right here in Brampton — they all got swept because they didn’t agree with 413.”

you’ll soon be out of a job.
