May 23, 2024 – The Brampton Arts Organization (BAO) kicks off its ‘Community Connects’ workshop series this Saturday, May 25. The first of four workshops, titled “Fundamentals of Story Structure in Film,” will run from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at the BAO Office, located at 8 Nelson Street West.

This free workshop welcomes early-career and aspiring filmmakers. Paula Ner Dormiendo and Pam Lau will lead the session. Dormiendo, a Filipino Canadian director and editor, has had her work showcased internationally and on CBC Gem. Lau, a Brampton-born photographer and director, co-founded Ecru, an initiative supporting creatives facing barriers. Together, they aim to demystify the screenwriting process.

Participants will learn the basics of story structure and character development. The workshop will use short films from local and BIPOC Canadian artists as examples. Attendees will also get to analyze key elements of plot and characterization. The goal is provide a safe and supportive space for local artists.

The ‘Community Connects’ Series

The ‘Community Connects’ series aims to strengthen ties within Brampton’s diverse creative community. It encourages communal learning and knowledge sharing. The series includes three more workshops:

  1. Kelewele African Dance Camp – June 23, 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM, at DoggPound MMA.
  2. Sowing Seeds Session On Mindfulness – July 9, 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, at the BAO Office.
  3. Communal Cyanotype Mural Workshop – July 20, 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, at Rose Theatre Patio.
