As 2017 rolls in, a bunch of new provincial and municipal regulations are coming into effect. Here’s 10 of the most notable ones:

1. You’ll be paying less on your hydro bills

The province’s share of HST, amounting to eight per cent, will be removed from hydro bills.

2. Gas and heating will be more expensive

Ontario’s new cap-and-trade program will bring the cost of gasoline and heating up in 2017. The average household can expect to pay $156 more to heat their homes this year.

3. Your property taxes are going up

Property taxes in Brampton are going up this year. Expect to pay an average of $100 more. (Based on homes approx. $400,000 in value)

4. More restaurants will have calorie counts on their menus

The Ministry of Health is making it mandatory for all chain restaurants with over 20 locations to list calorie counts on their menus.

5. Tow truck drivers will have to be more transparent

As of January 1, all two truck drivers will have to disclose their rates in advance, accept credit card payments, provide invoices and prominently display their company names and contact information.

6. No more carding and street checks

Police officers will no longer be able to arbitrarily stop people and ask for ID without any grounds.

7. First-time homebuyers will get more refunds

First-time homebuyers will be eligible for refunds of up to $4,000 on the Land Transfer Tax.

8. Travel agencies will also be more transparent

Advertisements from travel agents will have to include all fees and taxes in displayed prices.

9. Private career colleges will be better regulated

Private career colleges like, Everest, Trios and more, that are shutting down will have to refund students’ tuition or complete their training.

10. More physical activities for kids in before and after school care

Before and after-school child care programs must provide at least 30 minutes of outdoor time every day.
